Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
This is a good weight loss operation with a confusing name. A stapler is used to remove a large portion of the stomach. The stomach is changed from a large pouch to a smaller "sleeve" of a stomach. This is not the same thing as the older "stomach stapling" operation. This newer procedure works by reducing the size of the stomach and also reduces the appetite. Sleeve gastrectomy has been shown to be as effective as gastric bypass in terms of sustained weight loss. It is now covered by most insurance plans. Call today for a consultation to see if this is a good option for you.

Important Points to Consider
More complex than gastric banding. Results similar to gastric bypass, more predictable than gastric banding. Procedure can not be reversed. Complications include leaking or bleeding from staple line. Follow up not as critical as with gastric banding. This practice will not perform this procedure for BMI over 70. Insurance companies require an approval process which typically takes 3 to 6 months. Financing is available for patients without insurance coverage for this procedure.
